Performance of Four Sources of Breeder Seed of ‘Vantage’ Reed Canarygrass1

Similarity in genetic composition of breeder seed lots produced in different years or locations is required for stability of forage crop synthetic cultivars during seed increase. The main objective of this study was to determine whether breeder seed of ‘Vantage’ reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.), produced in two geographical locations in two different years, were similar in agronomic characteristics. Polycross progeny from each parent clone produced in isolated crossing blocks at Ames, Iowa and Prosser, Wash. in 1973 and 1974 were evaluated in space-planted field experiments at both locations. Plants produced from the breeder seed from the four seed sources were similar in anthesis date, plant height and panicle production. Polycross progeny of the six parent clones differed significantly in performance for those traits. Performance was positively correlated with previously published parental clone performance for each trait. We concluded that Vantage breeder seed produced at either location could be used as reliable planting stock for the production of foundation seed.
