Megasporogenesis and embryo sac development of Schizachyrium sanguineum (Retz.) Alst. var. brevipedicellatum (Beal) Hatch (2n=40) and l00), S. sanguineum (Retz.) Alst. var. sanguineum (2n=80), S. cirratum (Hack.) Woot. and Standl. (2n=20), and S. scoparium (Michx.) Nash var. neomexicanum (Nash) Gould (2n=40) were investigated. Results suggest that S. sanguineum var. brevipedicellatum (2n=40 and 100) are facultative and obligate aposporous apomicts, respectively. All other taxa appeared to be sexual.
It may be possible to manipulate apomixis in the potentially important forage and eonservation species, S. sanguineum var. brevipedicellatum and transfer apomixis from this variety (2n=40) into little bluestem (S. scoparium (Michx.) Nash var. frequens F. T. Hubb.), also 2n=40, through wide hybridization.
