The amount of outcrossing on three short stature male steriles of rice (Oryza sativa L.) was studied when planted in alternate rows with pollinators constituted of a mixture of tall cultivars. The seed set observed on the Calady and Earllrose genetic male steriles was very poor, indicating that neither can be considered useful in hybrid seed production or population improvement. The Bit-Co cytoplasmic male sterile source showed average seed set of 5.4% in 1978 and 32.5 % in 1979. The higher seed set in 1979 apparently was due to better synchronization of flowering of male and female plants. Some selfing occurs in this source, amounting to 3.5% in 1979.
