Effect of Honeybees on Crossing Percentage and Pod-Set in Guar1

R. E. Stafford2

The effect of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) on crossing percentage and pod set in guar [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.] was studied by comparing crossing blocks caged with and without bees and open-field crossing. Crossing was increased threefold in the block with honeybees, compared to the open-field and absence-of-bees crossing blocks. Maximum detected crossing using the glabrouspubescent marker was 13.3%. Pod set in open-field and with-bees crossing blocks was significantly higher than where bees were excluded; however, seeds per pod was greatest where bees were excluded. Cultivars differed significantly in pods per plant, seeds per pod, and amount of cross pollination.

Key Words: Cage • Outcrossing • Glabrous-pubescent • Cultivar • Native bees • Pollinator • Breeding line • Crossing block • Apis mellifera L. • Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub.
