Two methods (M-l and M-2) for cyclic hybridization in maize (Zea mays L.) not requiring prolific plants are proposed as alternatives to the original method (M-0) of Hallauer (1967) and Lonnquist and Williams (1967). The methods involve the use of pairs of related plants for hybridization and development of the inbred lines. Under method M-l "C" lines are produced through full-sib mating, while under method M- 2 "Z" lines are generated through a system called self-sib mating. The derivation of the recurrence equation giving the inbreeding coefficient under method M-2 was presented as well as the expected efficiencies of the two methods relative to M-0.
