The genetics of resistance to phytophthora rot (caused by Phytophthora megasperma Drechs. var. sojae Hildeb.) was studied in the soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivar PI 171442. PI 171442 is the donor of one of the genes for resistance in the cultivar Tracy, and is part of a uniform set of soybean differentials used to identify races of the disease-inducing organism. The results indicate that the dominant gene found in PI 171442 occupies a locus different from Rps1 and Rps2, and that both PI 171442 and PI 86972-1 have the Rps3 gene for resistance.
