Cytogenetic Analysis of Interspecific Hybrids Between Common Bean and Scarlet Runner Bean1

S. S. Cheng, M. J. Bassett and K. H. Quesenberry2

Meiotic analyses in FI hybrids between three lines of common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., and two lines of Scarlet runner bean, P. coccineus L., were conducted to study the degree of similarity between the two genomes. The quantitative data indicated that meiosis in the three F, hybrids studied was abnormal. At least two pairs of chromosomes were differentiated by inversions. Data on bridge and laggard frequencies taken from anaphase I and II pollen mother cells (PMCs) were interpreted to mean that cross-over within these inverted segments was responsible for 20 to 40% of the 58 to 79% pollen abortion observed in the interspecific hybrids. The identical frequency of PMCs with bridgelaggards in anaphase I and II indicated that the inversions were located at the end of the differentiated chromosomes.

Key Words: Chromosome inversions • Bridge frequencies • Pollen abortion • Sterility
