Tertiary Seed Set in Oat Cultivar1

Tertiary seed development may be a way for increasing the "sink size" for spring oats (Avena sativa L). Most cultivars set only prunary and/or secondary seeds in a spikelet, but occasionally, one will set a high proportion of tertiary seeds. Genotypic and environmental causes of variation of the tertiary seed set in oat spikelets were examined. The environmental variable was sowing date. Cultivars varied significantly for the tertiary seed set, and those with remarkably high values were ‘C.I. 8044’ and isolines of it. Heritability for the tertiary seed set was 68.3% on a per-plot basis. Tertiary seed set was slightly negatively genotypically correlated with primary seed set, but independent of secondary seed set. It was environmentally independent of both primary and secondary seed set. It was significantly lower in the late than in the early sown plots, which suggests that this trait is susceptible to high-temperature stress.
