The achene characteristics and combining ability of branching and non-branching near-isogenic restorer lines were compared. Branching lines were considerably higher in oil content but had smaller achenes than the non-branching forms. There was no difference in achene yield, oil content, and achene size between hybrids using branching and non-branching restorer lines as male parents.
