A four-row cone seeder was constructed with the objective of retaining the speed and efficiency of the cone distribution system while overcoming its deficiencies on uneven terrain. A self-leveling mechanism was developed which utilizes mercury switches to activate small electric motors and screw-jacks. A single-cone unit with a spinnerdistributor for multiple-row plots is interchangeable with a four-cone unit for planting individual rows. Disc, deep furrow, and shallow openers are easily interchangeable, as are three types of press wheels. Row lengths ranging continuously from 1.5 to 30 m are possible. The drill performed very satisfactorily in planting small grain yield trials over a wide range of terrain types during the 1978 season.
