A sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) line that produces some plants with heads of vegetative tissue was studied. These completely sterile heads have a massive proliferation of chaffy vegetative tissue where disk florets, and later achenes, usually form. The resulting head is revolute, extremely contorted, more or less globular, and usually splits in the center of the disk early in development. Ray flowers are not present, nor are the usual disk florets. The line was derived from PI 175728 introduced from Turkey. In 1976 normal plants were selfed in segregating nursery rows, and 113 normal: 35 chaffy head plants were observed [
3(3:1) = 0.144] in 1977. The symbol ch is suggested for this chaffy head character that is apparently conditioned by a single recessive gene.
