In 1975, 1,618 lines and cultivars of safflower (Carghamus tinetorius L.) were studied for seven agr6nomic traits. All were from Iran except for 28 fines and cultivars from the United States. The traits, in terms of percentages of the mean of the two nearest check rows, varied as follows: 1) number of days from planting to flowering, 85 to 198%; 2) plant height, 61 to 182%; 3) number of heads per plant 10 to 241%; 4) number of seeds per head, 11 to 42B%; 5) seed weight, 71 m 169%; 6) seed yield, to 539%; 7) oil percentage, 79 to 124%.
