A Developmental Analysis of Seed Size in Common Bean1

Francis C. Hsu2

A comparative, developmental analysis of seed size was made between two cultivars of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with contrasting mature seed sizes. The seed of large-seeded cultivar ‘Taylor’s Horticultural’ is smaller than that of small-seeded cultivar P.I. 226895 from anthesis to day 20, and this relationship is reversed from day 20 to maturation. This pattern of relative size relationship is manifested by the whole seed and by both major components of the seed (embryo and seed coat). Length, weight, and volume were the parameters measured to determine seed size; measurements of all three were continued throughout development of the seed.
