A Modified Transplanter For Establishing Space-Planted Nurseries1

M. C. Engelke, J Naivar, J. Davis and R. R. Smith2

Mechanical transplanters reduce labor requirements while providing uniform planting depth, consistent water supply to, and uniform soil compaction around each transplant. However, commercially available machines are not designed to plant in a grid pattern that would permit cross cultivation. Therefore, we adapted the check planting system to a commercially available transplanter. Using this modified mechanical transplanter, we could establish nurseries in a uniform grid pattern, permitting cross cultivation for mechanical weed control and nursery maintenance. This system reduces the hours of hand cultivation by about 60% and expedites establishment of the nurseries.
