Effects of Sucrose Concentration on Plant Production in Anther Culture of Rice1

Chi-Chang Chen2

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) anthers of various developmental stages were cultured on medium with 3%, 6%, and 9% sucrose to test the effects of sucrose concentration on plant production. It was found that high sucrose concentrations in the callus-induction medium promoted callus formation and subsequent organogenesis. However, callus initiated on the 9% sucrose medium differentiated more albino plants than callus from the medium with lower sucrose concentrations.

Key Words: Oryza sativa L. • Pollen callus • Plant regeneration
