Recurrent Selection for Changing Gene Frequency of Germination Rate in Blue Panicgrass1

Genotypes of blue panicgrass, Panicum antidotale Retz, with extreme rates of germination were isolated through succeeding cycles by recurrent phenotypic selection with restricted intercrossing by random mating. The number of days required to germinate 50% of the seed was used to estimate rate of germination. Daily germination data were used to determine germination rate estimates by the Regression Index (RI) method. Genetic variability was evident in each cycle of selection. The frequency of desired genotypes for rate of germination increased through the sixth cycle. The estimated number of days required to germinate 50% of seed of the sample in the sixth cycle was 5.5 days (range 0.4 to 8.3) for the fast rate of germ. ination and 13.8 days (range 8.0 to 32.3) for the slow rate of germination. Results indicate that phenotypic recurrent selection can effectively shift the frequency of genes affecting germination rate in blue panicgrass.
