Four Independent Mutations at the ms1, Locus in Soybeans1

Four independent recessive mutations for male sterility were identified in soybeans, Glycine max (L.) Merrill. The mutations, designated the North Carolina, Urbane, Tonica, and Ames male steriles, arose spontaneously and independently of each other. The North Carolina and Tonica male steriles were found in farmers' fields as off-type plants. The Urbane male sterile was found in an F3 breeding population. The Ames male sterile was identified in a population segregating for the desynaptic gene st4. Genetic evidence, both from testcrosses and segregation from fertile testcrosses, indicated that these four mutations were at the ms1 locus. The data did not discriminate between identical mutations and a multiple allelic series at the ms1 locus. This is the first report, as far as the authors are aware, of four independently occurring recessive mutations for failure of cytokinesis at the same locus.
