Delaying Flowering of Grain Sorghum Lines for Hybrid Seed Production1

A problem facing producers of hybrid grain sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, seed is using lines that have different flowering times. This study compared flaming, clipping, and applying a contact herbicide as methods to delay flowering. Two pollinator and two male-sterile lines were treated at the three-leaf stage, five-leaf stage, or both. Generally, flaming and clipping produced similar delays; applying a contact herbicide produced significantly less delay. Flaming or clipping at the three-leaf stage or five-leaf stage produced 3 to 8 days delay at Manhattan and 2 to 6 days delay at Hutchinson, Kansas. Treating the plants twice resulted in the greatest delay using all three methods at both locations.
