Esterase Isoenzyme Differences in Seed Extracts among Soybean Cultivars1

R. C. Payne and T. J. Koszykowski2

Seed extracts of 44 soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars were analyzed by polyacrylamide disc electrophoresis for esterase activity. Five esterase isoenzymes were consistently detected in all of the cultivars. There were quantitative differences among cultivars in the activity of the two isoesterases having higher Rf values. These differences should serve as aids in identifying soybean cultivars.

Key Words: Glycine max (L.) Merr. • Discelectrophoresis • Polyacrylamide
