Effects of Intergenotypic Competition on Genetic Parameter Estimation1

J. Hamblin and A. A. Rosielle2

Genetic parameters are often estimated from mixtures of genotypes, but the models used rarely take into account neighbor effects, and those that do are excessively complicated. We developed a simple model that illustrates the effects of competition on genetic parameter estimation when published data are used. The results show how unreliable predictions from mixed cultures may be for pure culture.

Key Words: Genetic effects • Genetic variance • Competitive effects • Competitive variance
