Inheritance of Kernel Hardness in Spring Wheat1

An "inbred-backcross" technique was used to study the inheritance of kernel hardness in two spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) crosses. Seventy-three inbred lines from the second backcross of ‘Pitic 62’ to ‘Neepawa’ and 91 inbred lines from the second backcross of ‘Glenlea’ to Neepawa were evaluated in four-replicate randomized block experiments in each of 2 years. Grinding time was used as the measure of kernel hardness. The difference between Pitic 62, a soft wheat, and Neepawa, a hard wheat, was found to be governed by two major genes and one or more minor genes. A single major gene and one or more minor genes accounted for the difference in grinding time between Glenlea, a very hard wheat, and Neepawa.
