Because Ethiopia provided the only source of resistance to the barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) disease in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), a test for parallel variation was made with Ethiopia tetraploid wheats (Triticum turgidum L.). High levels of BYDV resistance have not been found in wheat (T. aestivum L. em Thell. or T. turgidum L.). Ethiopian materials from the USDA world collection were no exception, but 40 entries out of the 584 tested showed tolerance in 4 or 5 years of field tests. Three entries (CI 17610, CI 17621, and CI 17647) had symptom expression comparable to Anza, a tolerant common wheat cuitivar, but none was as resistant as certain Ethiopian barleys. Ethiopia is apparently not a center for BYDV resistance in wheat, but further collections are needed.
