The interrelationship between the pale-yellow character and certain agronomic and chemical traits was studied in isogenic lines derived from five cultivars of flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). Isogenic lines with the pale-yellow character were compared with their green recurring parent and a green sister selection in each family. The pale-yellow gene had little or no effect on days to flower or total alkaloid content. Slightly reduced leaf number and yield were associated with pale-yellow lines in some families. A decrease in starch and sugar and an increase in alpha amino nitrogen were associated with the pale-yellow character. The grade index of pale-yellow lines was equal to or better than that of the recurrent parent or green sister selections.
