Twenty species and two subspecies comprising 369 accessions of the USDA Digitaria collection were screened in greenhouse trials for resistance to gray leaf spot, Pyricularia grisea (Cke.) Sacc. Techniques were developed whereby living plants could be evaluated for comparative resistance following inoculation. Tests were conducted to ascertain differential resistance to gray leaf spot among and within species. Three species were immune, various degrees of resistance were present in 13 species and two subspecies, and four species were susceptible. Immune or highly resistant germplasm constitutes approximately two-thirds of the collection, thus enhancing its value as a source of disease resistance. Paramount consideration should be given to individual clonal behavior in the continued search for and utilization of disease-resistant germplasm.
