Inheritance of Resistance to Race C2 of Cercospora beticola in Sugarbeet1

Crosses between sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) lines that differed in their reaction to race C2 of Cercospora beticola Sacc. were studied in F1, F2, testcross, and F2 resistant x susceptible populations. Resistance to race C2 was shown to be conditioned by a single dominant gene (Cb = resistant, cbcb = susceptible). The Cb allele had no influence on reaction to race C1. Sugarbeet lines with quantitatively inherited resistance to Cercospora leaf spot but without the Cb allele displayed nearly equal reactions to isolates of both races. The resistant reaction in sugarbeet was manifested either by apparent immunity or by a highly resistant fleck reaction. Of the lines surveyed, the Cb allele was found in lines derived from ‘GW 359’ and in US 201.
