Modified Vitreous Endosperm Recom-Binants from Crosses of Normal and High Lysine Sorghum1

Shree P. Singh2

Modified recombinants with varying degree of kernel vitreosity were obtained in crosses between normal and high lysine Ethiopian sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] lines. The opaque and translucent fractions of the modified types had floury and vitreous endosperms, respectively. Although the protein content of these modified selections, in general, was relatively lower than their normal and high lysine parents, the lysine values in protein were comparable to that of high lysine parents. Therefore, it seems possible to breed for modified types with good quality protein in sorghum.

Key Words: Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench • Opaque • Floury • Protein • Lysine • Nutrional quality
