Chromosome Pairing in Triploid F1 and Hexaploid F1, F2, and F3 Generations of Gossypium Hirsutum L. x G. Sturtianum Willis1

E. P. da Silva, J. E. Endrizzi, L. S. Stith and H. Muramoto2

Chromosome pairing was studied in the triploid F1 and the hexaploid F1, F2, and F3 generations of Gossypium hirsutum L. (AD genome) x G. sturtianum Willis (C genome) hybrid. Pairing in the hexaploid forms in each generation was essentially homogenetic indicating that the transfer of agronomic characters between genomes by conventional breeding methods for cotton improvement would be difficult.

Key Words: Interspecific hybrid • Homogenetic pairing • Heterogenetic pairing • C genome • AD genomes • Wild diploid species • Cotton
