Effects of Storage Conditions, Packaging Materials, and Moisture Content on Longevity of Crimson Clover Seeds1

Seeds of crimson clover (Trifol ium incarnatum L.), dried to 5 and 6.9% moisture content, were packaged in containers constructed of various heat-sealable materials and stored up to 11 years at a wide range of temperature and relative humidity (RH) conditions. Materials containing foil provided good moisture and germinationprotection. Under high temperatures (30 C) or high RH (90%), seeds in good moisture-barrier containers lived longer than did seeds in poor moisture-barrier containers. Under favorable storage conditions, protective packaging had less effect on seed longevity.
