Heritability of Purple Seed Stain Resistance in Soybeans1

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] plants in the F2, F3, and F4 generations from the cross ‘Amsoy’ x PI 80837 were inoculated with Cercospora kikuchii (Matsumoto and Tomoyasu) Gardner, the causal organism of purple seed stain. Incidence of purple seed stain averaged 84.3, 28.4, and 85.7% on Amsoy and 2.8, 0.2, and 2.3% on PI 80837 during the 3 years of the test. Heritabilities for disease incidence were 0.91 in the F2 and 0.51 in the F3 generations. Predicted response to selection closely approximated observed gains, when the most resistant 10% of the plants in each generation were evaluated in the next generation. Since the disease has not been shown to adversely affect agronomic characteristics, selection against extreme susceptibility seems more appropriate than intensive selection for a high level of resistance to the disease.
