This investigation tested the hypothesis that differences can exist among soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars in the accumulation rate of seed dry matter during the linear phase of seed growth. At West Lafayette, Ind., in 1971, the fruit of Harosoy 63, Beeson, Calland, and Kent cultivars was harvested at weekly or more frequent intervals from replicated, 1-m row lengths. Sampling extended from soon after anthesis until past maturity. Seeds were separated from subsamples of the dried fruit. Growth rate of the seed component during the linear phase of seed growth was estimated by regressing seed weight on days from planting after eliminating nonlinear data. Seed numbers were also determined for three of the harvests.
Contrary to results of an earlier study, seed growth rates differed significantly at the 5% level during the linear growth phase from 7.94 to 9.80 g m–2 day–1. Seed numbers did not differ significantly among the cultivars, indicating that the individual seeds had different mean growth rates among the cultivars
