Inheritance of reaction to three strains, "Type" (PV43), NDI, and CV52, of barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) was studied in F1 and segregating populations of a diallel cross of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties Traill, Modjo 1, and Moreval. A multiple allelic series was proposed for reaction to the Type strain, with the susceptible allele of Traill dominant to the resistant allele of Modjo 1, but recessive to the resistant allele of Moreval. A single gene conditioned reaction to strain NDI, with susceptibility of Traill and Modjo 1 dominant to resistance of Moreval. Varietal genotypes proposed for reaction to the Type strain of BSMV were Sm3bSm3b for Traill, Sm3aSm3a for Modjo 1, and Sm3cSm3c for Moreval. Genotypes Sm5Sm5 for Traill and Modjo 1 and sm5sm5 for Moreval were proposed for reaction to BSMV strain NDI. All three varieties were susceptible to strain CV52, and segregation was not observed hi hybrid populations. Genes controlling reaction to the Type strain of BSMV were inherited independently of genes for stem rust reaction, aleurone color, spike row number, and rachilla hair length. In a few instances, the BSMV used in the study proved unstable or mixtures of virus strains existed.
