Phenotypic models with and without genotype-environment interaction (
) are represented graphically. for a variety that is planted in several environments the model without interaction is represented as a regression line of phenotypic values on environmental indices, with a slope equal to one and no deviations from regression. In the model with interaction neither of these conditions is fulfilled. The interaction term 
is the deviation of actual phenotypic values from the regression line with slope equal to one, and 
is the deviation of the phenotypic values from the adjusted regression line with slope different from one. A stable variety is defined as one which does not interact with environments.
