Single Height-Gene Effects in Hybrids of Doubled Haploid Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench1

Effects of a single height gene were determined in 2-dwarf vs 3-dwarf and in 3-dwarf vs 4-dwarf sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) hybrids. Characteristics among hybrids of ‘ATx3197’ and ‘ATx3118,’ each crossedto a short line, were compared to two tall mutant lines derived from a doubled haploid. Among the hybrids with a specific female parent, those from the tall male parents exceeded those from the short male parent in height and kernel weight. Females x males interactions were noted for height and kernel weight. Among the A3197 hybrids,those from tall male parents had a greater yield than those from the short male parent. Hybrids from the two tall mutant lines also differed in weight of kernels from main panicles. Most characteristics for which tall and short hybrids differed were the same as those noted to differ among these male parents when they were lines in previous studies.
