Solar radiation receipt of isolated tall plots and embedded short plots of sugarcane (Saccharum hybrid) was calculated for several plot sizes and compared with that received by uniformly level plots. The differences in energy received were capable of causing serious errors when assessing mutual relationships between small plots of sugarcane or other tall row crops. Extrapolating from performance in small plots to expected field performance is likely to be invalid without adequate precautions in trial design.
