Analysis of Irradiation Induced Virescent Mutants and the Identification of a New Virescent Mutant (v5v5,v6v6) in Gossypium hirsutum L.1

R. J. Kohel2

Seven irradiation induced virescent cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) mutants were analyzed. Four were duplicates of virescent-1 and two were duplicates of yellowgreen. One virescent was independent of all known virescents. The new virescent was conditioned by recessive duplicate factors, and it was assigned the gene symbols v5v5,v6v6. Linkage analysis showed that the v5 locus resides in the A subgenome on chromosome 1, adjacent to the LL locus; and the v6 locus is on the homeologous D subgenome chromosome 15, adjacent to the Lo locus. No recombination was obtained between v5 and LL or v6 and Lo. The results of this investigation firmly establish the homeology between chromosomes 1 and 15.
