Prominent leaf-blade pubescence was observed in lines derived from Avena sterilis L./A. byzantina C. Koch crosses. The leaf pubescence is easily seen with the naked eye and also can be detected by touch. The character appears to be rather stable over a wide range of environments. Breeding material possessing this trait is now available for distribution to interested workers. A few samples already have been distributed to allow screening the material for resistance to the cereal leaf beetle (Oulema melanopus L.).
