Dry matter yields of hybrids from Pennisetum typhoides S. & H. v. Maiwa, a short-day photoperiod-sensitive pearl millet selection from Northern Nigeria, and P. purpureum Schum., elephantgrass, were comparable to the elephantgrass parent in the lowland humid tropics of Nigeria. Under similar conditions hybrids from Tift 23 A, a malesterile millet selection from the U.S., and elephantgrass produced significantly less forage than elephant grass. Male-sterile lines of Maiwa were obtained by transferring the male sterility factors of Tift 23 A.
