A modified dye-binding (MDB) method of protein analysis was adapted for fast analysis of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) herbage samples. Results from the MDB method and the micro-Kjeldahl (Kj) method of protein analysis were highly correlated (r=0.96); the relationship was linear over the range of protein values expected of alfalfa herbage. The MDB method was satisfactory for detecting high- or low-protein alfalfa samples and for predicting the corresponding micro-Kj protein values from the equation, Kj = 2.90 + 0.389 (MDB). The coefficient of variation for MDB was less than 2%; MDB was equally, or more, precise than micro-Kj.
