Hybridization of Desmodium canum(Gmel.) Schin. and Thell. and D. uncinatum (Jacq.) DC.1

Kuan-how Chow and L. V. Crowder2

Three F1 hybrids were obtained from the cross of Desmodium canum (Gruel.) Schin. and Thell. and D. uncinatum (Jacq.) DC. The parents differ considerably in morphology, light response, floral biology, and flowering behavior. The three F1 plants were morphologically identical. They had the semi-decumbent growth habit of D. canum did not show the silver leaf-marking of D. uncinatum, displayed less plant growth than the parents, and developed certain intermediate characteristics. The hybrids did not produce flowers under 11- and 14-hour (or longer) periods of light. Apparently, this is the first report of successful hybridization.
