We studied malting characteristics in parents and hybrids of six-rowed winter barleys. A large-seeded barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) selection was used as the maternal parent and crossed with seven cultivars and selections varying in kernel size. Seeds harvested from parents and hybrids were evaluated for malting quality. As an average over seven crosses, midparent heterosis was significant (5% level) for fine grind and coarse grind mall. extract. Kernel plumpness of the hybrids exceeded the midparent average although the difference was nonsignificant. Barley and wort nitrogen were significantly below the midparent averages. No heterosis for amylolytic activity was observed.
