F1 and F2 populations of sorghum plants [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] from the resistant varieties Shallu Grain (SA 7536-1), PI 264453, and IS 809 were scored for damage from the greenbug [Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)] in short rows in flats in the greenhouse. The study was conducted to determine the inheritance of greenbug resistance, to determine the feasibility of transferring the resistance to adapted lines, and to predict the usefulness of the resistance in hybrids. F1 plants gave an intermediate score between resistant and susceptible parents but indicated that one parent in a hybrid could give considerable resistance to greenbugs. Data from F2 populations indicated that the inheritance of resistance probably was controlled by a single incompletely dominant factor, and that breeders should have little difficulty transferring resistance to adapted lines. Average number of dead plants per entry and average reduction in height due to greenbugs were highly correlated with damage scores.
