Genetic Control of Glycoflavone Production in Wheat1

W. Dedio and P. J. Kaltsikes2

Two dimensional thin-layer chromatography of three cultivars of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.), their extracted AABB tetraploids, and two cultivars of durum wheat (T. turgidum L. var. durum) revealed at least 11 flavonoid compounds. Evidence from UV spectrophotometry, hydrolysis products, and Rf values indicated these to be glycoflavones with apigenin or luteolin bases. All cultivars exhibited similar chromatographic patterns, but quantitative variation was observed among them. The patterns of the extracted tetraploids were almost identical to those of their hexaploid counterparts, indicating considerable duplication of flavonoidsynthesizing genes.

Key Words: Thin-layer chromatography • Genome reconstitution • Triticum aestivumTriticum durum
