Kernel Phenotypes of Zea Mays L. Genotypes Possessing One to Four Mutated Genes1

D. L. Garwood and R. G. Creech2

Kernel phenotypes of 12 maize (Zea mays L.) mutants and 82 two-, three-, and four-gene combinations are presented. These gene mutations are amylose-extender, brittle-1, brittle-2, dull, floury-1, horny, opaque-2, shrunken-1, shrunken-2, sugary-1, sugary-2, and waxy. Specific gene interactions are described. Knowledge of these interactions permits efficient development of multiple gene combinations.

Key Words: Opaque-2 maize • Sweet corn • High amylose maize • Waxy maize • Endosperm mutants
