Reactions between pollen and pistils of Buffalo alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) were studied in vitro. In most cases pollen tube length varied significantly when pollen from a plant was placed in combinations with pistils from different plants. Variations in pollen tube length associated with the pollen-pistil combinations were not significantly related to compatibility differences.
