- (2,4-dichlorophenyl)-
-phenyl- 5-pyrimidinemethanol (EL-273)1
A new systemic fungicide,
-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-
-phenyl-5-pyrimidinemethanol, supplied by Eli Lilly and Company3 under code EL-273, has controlled and apparently eradicated Urocystis agropyri (flag smut) and Ustilago striiformis (stripe smut) in infected plants Poa pratensis Merion after a single application to soil in the root zone. Effective dosages for eradication of U. agropyri and U. striiformis were 7 to 8 mg in 600 ml soil containing plants with 15 to 20 shoots or 7 to 8 mg on 92 cm2 of sod surface. Plants cured of both smuts remained smut-free for 48 weeks. Shoots infected with U. striiformis became chlorotic and died within 8 to 10 weeks after application of effective dosages of EL-273 and were replaced by healthy shoots arising from basal stem buds. Shoots infected with U. agropyri were not killed by minimum effective dosages and became smut-free by development of healthy leaf tissue from basal meristems of existing shoots. Healthy plants were only slightly affected by EL-273 at dosages effective for smut eradication. Applications of EL-273 at 0.25 mg in 600 ml soil or 0.5 mg on 92 cm2 sod also controlled Erysiphe graminis (powdery mildew) in P. pratensis. EL-273 is considered promising for control of stripe smut and flag smut, both in turf and in grasses grown for seed.
