Selections and cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) P.I. 178383, P.I. 94349, Burt (C.I. 12696), Suwon 92 (C.I. 12666), and Omar (C.I 13072) were tested for reaction to flag smut, Urocystis tritici Koern.
P.I. 178383 and P.I. 94349 each have single recessive genes for resistance to flag smut. The genes appear to be different and to have no association with plant height, head type, awnedness, or kernel color. Burt also possesses a single recessive gene that is different from the P.I. 94349 gene for resistance to the pathogen. Omar demonstrated a low level of resistanc to flag smut. Susceptibility of Suwon 92 behaves as a completely dominant characteristic.
