Electrophoretic Patterns Among Alfalfa Seed Proteins from Selected Varieties, Experimental Stocks, and Species Accessions1

Seed proteins from 30 alfalfa varieties, several experimental stocks, and 26 species accessions of Medicago sativa and M. falcata were studied with basic gel disc electrophoresis. Protein patterns in general were basically similar in cultivated and wild materials, and at diploid and tetraploid levels. One major band was present in M. falcata and some varieties, absent in pure M. sativa accessions and some varieties, and segregating among individual varietal plants and experimental stocks. This band appeared under genetic control and could be useful to verify hybridization or in genetic analysis. Cultivated varieties were separated into four groups on the basis of the absence or presence and density of one main band. Varieties within a group could be further separated by visual density differences among several other bands, but not individually identified.
