Selection for Persistence in ‘DuPuits’ Alfalfa1

T. J. Smith2

The ‘DuPuits’ variety of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) rapidly loses plant stands when grown under field conditions in Virginia. Experimental strains from the interpollinated seed of surviving DuPuits plants obtained in one cycle of natural selection under field conditions were superior to DuPuits in persistence, yield, and resistance to southern anthracnose (Colletotrichum trifolii Bain and Essary). They also were equal in persistence to the check variety, ‘Williamsburg,’ and were superior in yield and anthracnose resistance.

Key Words: Natural selection • Selection pressure • Stand persistence
