Analysis of Genetic Resistance to Maize Dwarf Mosaic Disease

G. R. Johnson2

Twenty maize diallel cross experiments, grown as part of a screening program for the isolation of resistance to maize dwarf mosaic virus disease, were analyzed to investigate the genetic basis for MDM resistance and to compare several methods for predicting three- and fourway hybrid performance.

General combining ability variance accounted for most of the variation among crosses; resistance appeared to be usually transmitted with nearly complete dominance; and midparent heterosis for resistance was observed. The performance of non-parental single crosses predicted three- and four-way cross performance most accurately.
