Inheritance of a New Factor (Bt8) for Resistance to Common Bunt in Wheat1

J. L. Waud and R. J. Metzger2

A previously unreported major dominant gene segregated for resistance to races T-1, T-15, T-16, and L-8 of common bunt (Tilletia caries and T. foetida) in a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cross of ‘Yayla 305’, P.I. 178210 (resistant) x ‘Elgin’ (susceptible). The gene, designated Bt8, determines resistance to all races of common bunt known to be present in the Pacific Northwest states.

Key Words: Disease resistance • Covered Smut • Aneuploids
